Glutathione Peroxidase in Ovarian Cancer Patients

Abstract


Background. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is one of the antioxidant enzymes that maintain the balance of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). So that, GPx plays an important role in the progressiveness of a cancer cell, including ovarian cancer. Transcription of this enzyme was down-regulated in cases of ovarian cancer.

Objective. This study aims to identify the difference of the glutathione peroxidase serum levels in ovarian cancer patients and normal healthy people.

Methods. This was an observational analytic study with case control design. This study was conducted in Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Haji Adam Malik Hospital in Medan, Indonesia. GPx was measured in the serum of twenty ovarian cancer patients and twenty normal subjects as control. The results were tested by unpaired t-test with significant value was set at p<0.05.

Results. The histopathology types of ovarian cancer in this study were serous adenocarcinoma (50%) and non-serous adenocarcinoma (50%). Statistically, the mean of GPx serum level in the ovarian cancer case group was lower (295.235 mU/ml ± 244.479) than the control group (743.546 mU/ml ± 131.949) (p <0.05). The median of GPx serum level in serous ovarian cancer was lower (209.915 mU/ml) than in the one of non-serous cancer (338.885 mU/ml), however the difference was not statistically significant (p >0.05).

Conclusion. Serum glutathione peroxidase levels in ovarian cancer patients are significantly lower. Further studies are needed to determine cut off level of serum glutathione peroxidase in ovarian cancer.
